My Forester's Tyre History

My Forester came fitted with Bridgestone Dueler H/T (Highway Terrain) tyres. I suffered two punctures on the rear tyres, one of which was unrepairable.

Instead of buying 2 more new tyres and blindly accepting what was offered, I decided to propel myself into the fascinating rubbery world of tyres. The subject of tyres is full of physics, rubber and ... well, OK perhaps it's not all that fascinating... but, suffice it to say, I did my homework.
The obvious choice - given my off-roading ventures - is to purchase an All-Terrain tyre (A/T). All-Terrain tyres are basically stronger (more puncture-resistant) and have a more aggressive tread pattern for better off-road performance.

I have compiled a tabular history of my tyre upgrades below:

This is where my foray into off-roading modifications began. After learning the benefits of All-Terrain tyres, I was keen to equip my Forester with the necessary rubber.
As you can see in this photo, this is no minor change - I'm going serious off-road!

This larger tyre increases the rolling radius by approximately 14mm - which effectively lifts the entire vehicle 14mm higher off the ground. Combined with my bodylift, the Forester is now quite a bit higher than stock (264mm in theory).

Specification Radius Diameter Difference
205/70/R15 334mm 668mm 0.0%
225/70/R15 348mm 696mm 4.2%

Interestingly, this particular brand of tyre has a fairly narrow tread-width - I measured about only 3mm wider than the Dueler 205/70/R15's (above). This is despite the overall width being 20mm wider (including sidewall slopes and bulge).
As a design decision, I'm assuming that the narrower footprint applies greater pressure to the road surface because the weight of the vehicle is spread over a smaller area and therefore digs better than wider footprints (treads).

These tyres provide an increase of about 10mm in Rolling Radius from stock size. There was much discussion about whether this tyre size is legal in NSW (Australia), as there are strict limits on fitting non-standard tyres. After a lot of research and feedback from the RTA, I found that they are legal - and so I fitted them without an Engineer's inspection.
